There are varieties of turmeric supplements available today. The selection of best and more useful one is a difficult task. Before going for the purchase of a turmeric supplement, one should be informed about the difference between curcumin and turmeric.

Diferulomethane also known as curcumin is a bioactive component of turmeric. The term turmeric is used to refer the spice which is derived from the underground stems called rhizomes roots and roots of the plant as well as the Curcuma longa plant.

Turmeric has its origin in tropical Asian regions. Its culinary use has a history. Even in Chinese medicine it’s been in use from millions of years. Turmeric supplements are available in many forms like tablets, capsules, decoctions, tinctures, and even as creams. They are also found in some topical applications. 2-7% of curcumin will be present in turmeric. There are few supplements which even contain 95% of curcumin. One can choose the turmeric based on curcumin percentage if they are targeting for benefits of curcumin.

Turmeric and curcumin supplements:

Highest concentration of curcumin is found in rhizomes of the turmeric plant. These are nothing but underground or subterranean stems of the plant. Even though rhizomes usually grow under the ground, they are not same as roots. Unlike roots these grow horizontally. This causes the plant to spread all over the available area. New plant growth is produced by shoots which emerge from these rhizomes.

These rhizomes are in yellow or striking orange color. Pigmentation of the rhizomes are caused by curcumin. Most of the medical properties exhibited by these rhizomes are due to the presence of curcumin in it.

Bisdemethoxycurcumin and demethoxycurcumin are the two bioactive molecules which are produced when curcumin undergoes metabolism. These compounds also come with many clinical benefits. Curcumin and these two compounds together called cucuminoids.

If the supplement contains all the phytonutrients which are present in turmeric as well as curcuminoids then it is considered as a best turmeric supplement. There are more than 200 substances present in turmeric. Some of them are phenylpropene, diarylheptanoids, monoterpenes, sesquiterpenes, diterpenes, triterpenes, sterols, volatile oils, and alkaloids. Along with these, it even contains many minerals and fiber and even vitamins.
